The Farm Report

Breakfast this morning was a little bit of Cheerios (OK, generic Cheerios) with fresh strawberries. Yes, fresh as in picked from the back yard. I think we're getting to the end of the season, though. The berries that remain are sweeter, but smaller, both in size and in number. The thistles jealously stand guard over them. And many were tucked away under the herbs: I smell like rosemary now.

I also had a little bit of yogurt with raspberries. Now, the raspberries are just coming into their own, but are besieged by the grapes and ground elder. After I picked what I wanted, I spent a few minutes untangling and pulling. There's also a blackberry that's sneaking in back there, so between the lacerations and the crushed berries, I looked like I needed first aid. I smelled like I got into a fight with a jar of raspberry preserves and lost. Picture if you will, a family of cowering raspberry bushes behind a sentinel in leather gloves, armed with shears and shovels -- that's me: The Raspberry Defender.

Thistles and ground elder make me realize that yes, the yard needs more work yet. But I think that's enough for today. I slept in this morning and am going to go on a bike ride (on the trails!!! I'll save my
street-riding hide for the pack), then maybe see a movie this afternoon.

That's what my people died for! The right to go for a bike ride and see bad summer blockbusters!

Er, or something....

Happy Independence Day.
