I thought that hours on planes and in airports would give me ample opportunity to finish The Master and Margarita, but no. I'm only about two-thirds of the way through.

Love window seats. Clouds are pretty, but more interesting to me are the little towns, villages, and hamlets that pop out from nowhere in "flyover country". Why did they pick that location? How did they start? Sometimes it's obvious: a fertile valley, a good location for a river port, but other times it's a mystery. They're like nucleation sites in a boiling liquid. I can make up stories about how the towns got started, a la Dire Straits's Telegraph Road.

I also love watching the transformation from brown and browner to blue and green as we cross the Cascades. But perhaps the prettiest sight of all was the sun setting in the window behind the Coffee People in the airport when I returned.

(I had managed to find a Starbucks in Omaha, but they looked at me funny when I asked for a "triple".)
