I was driving home from work last night, thinking about how much my car needs a wash, when it occurred to me what one of the possible appeals of latex/vinyl/insert-your-favorite-tight-and-shiny-textile as clothing is.

The automobile and consumer electronics culture has fed us countless images of their products as desirable things... these smooth, curvy, glossy, shiny things, frequently linked with sex through their advertising campaigns.

So, we have people with these smooth, glossy, shiny textiles sheathing their curves, and what do we get? Facsimilies of desirable consumer products, which are closely associated with sexiness, which is associated with people in shiny textiles, which is....

(You get the idea. Positive feedback loop.)

And yes, I have to admit that my little black car looks awfully sexy when she's freshly washed and waxed.
