Hooked on fonix... er, phonics

I was looking at a linguistics website, trying to make sure that I was making proper reference to the noise made when you go 'EEEEEEE' (as in when you're excited about something), and how hard it is to make that noise when the thing that's exciting you is good food that you're eating (see later post). As it turns out, that particular noise is just called something really boring like "English Long E", but look at all the other cool names for noises we make when we talk:

  • Phonemic affricative
  • Sonorant glide
  • Liquid sonorant
  • Voiceless palatoalveolar fricative

OK, if you ignore things with names like "Glottal Stop" (which sounds like a painful medical condition brought on from taking too large a bite of your peanut-butter sandwich), those are really nifty-sounding names. I suspect it's a conspiracy on the part of the linguists, since they're the ones that are in charge of all the phonemes and they get to keep all the really cool combinations for themselves. Cunning.

Oh, and don't forget "Open Schwa", which sounds like it should be something that you could download from SourceForge.
