July 4th weekend. Three days. Three days off, ostensibly, as in, I don't have to work. And aside from an hour dealing with an emergency, I actually took the time off, for a change.

Sipping coffee, listening to hours of This American Life, Wait Wait, and Prairie Home Companion. Spinning jazz. Screening Fahrenheit 9/11 (comments forthcoming). Brushing the cat. Yard work. Sitting under the grape arbor, sipping wine, and reading (The Apprentice). A shopping spree at Tower (Sex and Lucia, Lea, Kieslowski's Trois Couleur trilogy, Malena, and Farewell My Concubine). Going for a bike ride in the hills south of Hillsboro (pretty views, and a new speed record on the road bike: 50 MPH!) Making The Veggie Soup and baking a loaf of Italian. Getting ready for the Nebraska trip.

Uhhhh... unfortunately, those two last items were completely incompatible. I still have most of a loaf of the bread, and mmm... probably a half-gallon of farmer's-market-based veggie soup. They go to the first person who claims them. I'll even deliver, if you live within 50 miles. Seriously. It's really good, and I'm going to be gone for a while, and would be sad if they went to waste.

We have a multi-function HP in the office that has a flatbed-scanner that also doubles as a fax machine. I did in fact "fax" a slice of pizza to a hungry, late-working colleague once, but I think the soup would be prohibitively messy.

Clearly, a job for FedEx.

I'm so glad that you actually took the time off. Sitting under the arbor sounds great! I'm a bit jealous of your purchases (some of my favorite movies!), but my new Tivo is attempting to comfort me.

Good luck on your trip!

A viewing of DreamGirls' "Spring Break 2004" suggests that there are real, live, cute girls in Nebraska. Came as a shock to me, but may be some small comfort to you. Not sure how many of them are geek girls, however. Probably far too few...
